Multicultural Children’s Book Day Read Your World 2025 (1/30/25) is in its 13th year! Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen founded this non-profit children’s literacy initiative; they are two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural diverse books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Read Your World’s mission is to raise awareness of the need to include kids’ books celebrating diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about its Mission and history HERE.
Let's Go to Egypt written by Dr. Vanessa Kohn-Refaat and Ahmed Refaat is a bilingual children's picture book that uses childlike wonder and loving family relationships to explore Egypt. This book was gifted to me to review for the Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2025 event (1/30/25).
Let's Go to Egypt is narrated through the eyes of two sisters, Lina and Nora, on a family trip to Egypt. They experience both famous elements of Egypt like the Nile and the pyramids but also learn about day-to-day cultural elements like shopping at the bazaar or how people dress. The sun's warmth, the graininess of sand, or a swirl of wind, throughout, watercolor illustrations blend the details of Egypt's past and welcome the reader into Egypt's present. The written text is intentionally kept simple so that it can be used as a more entertaining selection for language learning materials. Moreover, this bilingual book in Arabic and English provides a unique opportunity for multilingual families familiar with Egyptian dialect to build English language skills and feel close to their heritage.
