I am so excited to have the opportunity to present at the Wisconsin Library Association's Conference in 2019. As a professional who is new in another new position, I know how important it is to have these conversations. I am so honored to have been taught their importance by my former Guatemalan colleagues.

Library Language Learner

Kalahari Convention Center - Suite E

Erin Conway, UW-Madison Division of Extension, Janesville

Session Description: Upon returning to the United States, after mentoring staff in literacy education programs in Guatemala, the presenter soon realized that despite having an extensive literacy background she didn't speak "library." Today's libraries are blessed with diverse staff knowledge who speak many life experience languages. Based on her observations as a learner, this session provides the basics of how to unify staff learning and customer service practices around common topics like reference interviews and reader's advisory. Developed from her experiences working at Hedberg Public Library takeaways include example staff learning goals, activities and documents for group training and individual use.

I could not ask for more appropriate payment from the universe than the opportunity to listen to Ijeoma Oluo, Author of 2018 New York Times Bestselling book So You Want to Talk About Race, give the keynote address on the day I present my session.
